Here is my annual rant...View MoreHello again...It's Francheesh - The Czar of the Annual Howlett Oscar Pool. This is your honorary invitation to join the 8th annual Oscar Pool (9th annual if you are a Howlett).
Here is my annual rant that you have been looking forward to. Admit it!
But go to the bottom of this email if you want to skip this – I'll get over it - the entry info is below.
This year I am nominating a new Oscar's category (not really) Darkest/Least fun Best Picture...or Worst Best Picture.
This year two Nominees: Joker (the most oscar nominations 11 - so I'm a lunatic) & Marriage Story. As you may know, I am a very jolly galss half full pollyanna kind of guy...but both of these movies, which are up for best picture, were pretty bleak...yes? Is it entertaining when I can't wait for it to be over?
Honorable mention in this category - The Lighthouse. 91% on Rotten Tomatoes...so it easiiy coulda been nominated for BP.
I know a few of you disagree with me here...and I admit The Lighthouse had some ingenious effects - the spooky mermaid, a stubborn seagull, a few farts...and Willem (not mispelled) Dafoe is great but if you haven't seen it, you have escaped potential psychological trauma. I saw it and I need to see a shrink. I want those two hours back!! AND (warning: quick skip to the next paragraph)I dragged my wife and two friends to this movie because I have a thing of not watching trailers/knowing anything about a movie before seeing it...I just check reviews - and the Lighthouse reviews were good - so burnt again by this quirk of mine (D&D I apologize again)...but why would you want to know what a movie is about before seeing it? I don't get why anyone would watch a trailer...ok sorry - it's a rant.
I made a "quick" list of snubs: Apollo 11 (this isn't on the list for documentary?!) ...booksmart (released in may so maybe forgotten / maybe too young / a FUN movie)...the last black man in SanFrancisco (a great movie - somebody on the academy should go to jail)
rolling thunder review (Bob Dylan documentary-I see noise about too many Dylan movies? This was terrific.)...mike wallace is here (again documentary jeez great why??)...Ad Astra (was I the only one who saw this movie?)...gloria bell (simple Julianne Moore/John Turturro c'mon)..everybody knows (not dark enough?).
An obvious one - I haven't yet seen Little Women but how do they not nominate Greta Gerwig - obviously a great job directing with the twist in the story and an opportunity to nominate a talented woman don't get it.
I really should go back and delete some of this drivel (I know-Joker is good) but I'm tired and need to go to bed
Feel free to email respond and rebutt (that's not a real word) or post something on the Osacrs website....ok end of rant.
Here is the list or previous year's winners (Year Overall Winner / Best Howlett):
2013 Keren Daskin / Francheesh
2014 Doug Giombarrese(Who?) / Natalie
2015 Joey / Joey
2016 Natalie / Natalie
2017 Lisa Legato-Howlett / LLH
2018 George Rigakos / Natalie
2019 Julia Baker / Joey
I am considering adjusting Natalie's score as she has insider Hollywood information out there which is unfair to the rest of us (she a 4 time winner - Sign Stealing Nat?!)
As I type this, Ellen "Red Carpet" Miller-Gilcrest is about to give birth to her 1st baby. Last year she finished a close 2nd to the formidable Julia Baker. Ellen always a runner up in this pool, but with this baby magic certainly makes Ellen a favorite for this year's crown dontchathink?
Other contenders - Lorren Elkins who tied for 2nd last year, and Joey (5th and defending Howlett champ)
Claire Howlett & Sabri are not very good at this.
