In a statement issued by the Colts owner, Jim Irsay, it was revealed today that All Universe Quarterback Peyton Manning has just undergone yet another surgery to help alleviate the persistent pain in his ailing neck. The procedure (a single level anterior fusion) is common, but how this will impact Mannings ability to get back on the field remains to be seen. It is reasonable to assume that it will not be before week five, and it will likely be longer than that before we see the gunslinger back in the saddle.
This is a huge set back for Manning and the Colts, who have done little in the off season to prepare for life without Manning. With only two weeks in the Colts heady system, Kerry Collins will have his hands full with a complex playbook, and a suspect offensive line.
Irsay states that they "anticipate no further updates or availabilities beyond those required by the NFL Media Policy for the immediate future". I anticipate very little joy for Colts fans and those who drafted Manning in the first or second round of their fantasy drafts.
